About
One of the ablest and most respected generals of the Vendée, Bonchamps was a former officer of the royal army whose reputation rested on strategic skill, courage, and an unusual degree of humanity in so savage a war. Mortally wounded after the battle of Cholet, he entered history through the act that fixed his name: ordering the pardon of thousands of Republican prisoners at Saint-Florent.
