About
A merchant from Montpellier and Convention deputy, Cambon became one of the legislature’s leading specialists in public finance. In August 1793, he presented the plan for the Grand Livre de la dette publique, which consolidated the state’s debts within a single register and replaced the varied titles previously held by its creditors. He continued to play a prominent part in the management of revolutionary finances and opposed Robespierre at Thermidor. Elected to the legislature again during the Hundred Days, he was banished under the law of 1816 against regicides and died near Brussels in 1820.
