Napoleon in Liège
I took my youngest gremlin to La Boverie in Liège for what I optimistically hoped to be an enriching museum experience. I was immediately drawn to Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres’s enormous portrait of Napoléon Bonaparte as First Consul. This is not Bonaparte the young general, charging about Italy and collecting victories. It is Bonaparte the ruler, very consciously presented as the man who had come to restore order.
