Jean-Baptiste de Couëtus

A page of the queen who had served as a cavalry officer and left the army in 1792, Couëtus was put at the head of the peasants of Saint-Philbert-de-Grand-Lieu on 10 March 1793 and marched with them on Machecoul the next day. He commanded that division and fought beside Charette in the Marais through the following year, while his wife was taken at Bouin and guillotined at Nantes in February 1794. Charette made him second-in-command of his army in September 1794 and he signed the peace of La Jaunaye with him five months later. Consistently for peace, he was publishing the treaty when Charette resumed the war and had to be carried off by force. He broke with him at the end of 1795 and was shot at Challans on 4 January 1796.
