About
An Alsatian lawyer, Reubell represented Colmar and Sélestat in the Constituent Assembly and the Haut-Rhin in the Convention. Away on mission during the final vote on Louis XVI, he endorsed the death sentence by letter. As a representative on mission, he served with the Army of the Rhine. During the siege of Mainz, he took part in negotiating the French garrison’s capitulation in July 1793 and later defended the agreement against criticism in Paris. After 9 Thermidor, he joined the governing committees and worked on foreign affairs. As a Director from 1795 to 1799, he pressed for the Rhine as France’s eastern frontier and supported the coup of 18 Fructidor, which annulled elections and removed royalist opponents. Chosen by lot to retire in May 1799, he withdrew to Colmar and died there in 1807.
