About
Élisabeth, youngest sister of Louis XVI, remained with the royal family after her brothers emigrated and joined the flight to Varennes in June 1791. Her correspondence shows that she rejected the constitutional settlement and favoured stronger royal authority, although she held no office. Imprisoned in the Temple after 10 August 1792, she was transferred to the Conciergerie on 9 May 1794. Prosecutors accused her of assisting the flight, corresponding with émigrés and encouraging resistance at the Tuileries. Convicted by the Revolutionary Tribunal with twenty-four others, she was executed with twenty-three of them on 10 May.
