Louis-François Ripault de La Cathelinière

Barely out of the navy and hardly able to write when the war began, La Cathelinière was chosen general by the peasants of his canton in March 1793 after his father, too infirm to lead, gave up the command to him. He took Port-Saint-Père and Bourgneuf, where prisoners were shot and he killed the former mayor himself, and joined Charette at Pornic and at Machecoul. He held the Pays de Retz as an all but independent chief, nominally subordinate to Charette, and was one of the signatories of the Vendéan regulation of September 1793 that was afterwards used to convict him. Routed by Haxo in January 1794 and gravely wounded, he was found hiding under a wine press at his burnt farm on 1 March and guillotined at Nantes the next day.
