About
A lawyer from Rennes and a prominent deputy of the Third Estate in 1789, Le Chapelier presided over the National Assembly and helped organise the Breton Club, an antecedent of the Jacobin Club. He presented the law of 14 June 1791, which prohibited the re-establishment of occupational corporations and collective action by members of the same trade, including agreements over wages and concerted refusals to work. Later associated with the Feuillants and constitutional monarchy, he spent time in Britain before returning to France. Arrested under the émigré legislation, he was convicted by the Revolutionary Tribunal and executed on 22 April 1794.
