A councillor in the parlement of Metz and a political economist, Roederer encouraged the Academy of Metz to offer the competition on the civil status of French Jews in which the abbé Grégoire was one of three prize-winners. Elected to the Constituent Assembly in October 1789, he worked principally on taxation and helped develop the new system of direct contributions. As procureur-général-syndic of the department of Paris from November 1791, he was present at the Tuileries during the insurrection of 10 August 1792. Concluding that the palace could not be defended, he advised Louis XVI to seek the protection of the Legislative Assembly and conducted the royal family there. His actions brought accusations from opposing sides and forced him into hiding until after Thermidor. In 1799, Roederer helped prepare the coup of 18 Brumaire and subsequently contributed to the drafting of the Constitution of Year VIII. He died in 1835.
