About
Writing through the coarse popular persona of Père Duchesne, Hébert made his newspaper one of the best-known voices of Parisian sans-culotte politics. He attacked the monarchy, refractory clergy and successive political opponents, supported dechristianisation, and became a deputy prosecutor of the Paris Commune in December 1792. As conflict sharpened between the revolutionary government and the circle associated with him, Hébert and his principal allies were arrested, tried and guillotined in March 1794.
