About
A former bailiff’s clerk, Stanislas Maillard emerged as a prominent intermediary during the Parisian journées of the Revolution. He took part in the capture of the Bastille and, on 5 October 1789, accompanied the march to Versailles, where he led a deputation before the National Assembly and presented demands for bread and action against the royal bodyguards. During the September Massacres of 1792, he presided over the improvised tribunal at the Abbaye prison. Detainees were questioned and either released or sent outside to be killed. Maillard later undertook police work and died in Paris in April 1794.
