About
A former cavalry officer and deputy for the nobility, Cazalès became one of the most prominent defenders of royal authority in the Constituent Assembly. He argued for the royal veto and the preservation of the king’s executive powers, and opposed measures including the Civil Constitution of the Clergy. He left France in 1791 and served briefly with the royalist émigré forces during the campaign of 1792. After several years abroad, he returned to France under the Consulate in 1803 and died in 1805.
