About
A lawyer and Convention deputy for the Sarthe, Philippeaux voted for Louis XVI’s death and served on mission with the Army of the Coasts of La Rochelle in 1793. Returning to Paris, he blamed defeats in the Vendée on poor coordination, indiscipline and the conduct of Ronsin, Rossignol and War Ministry agents. His accusations provoked a bitter dispute in the Convention and Jacobin Club. Arrested with Danton and Desmoulins in March 1794, he was incorporated into a broader conspiracy prosecution that also included defendants accused in financial scandals. Convicted by the Revolutionary Tribunal, he was executed on 5 April.
