About
A young woman from a minor noble family in Normandy, Charlotte Corday sympathised with the proscribed Girondin deputies who had taken refuge in Caen during the federalist revolt. Believing that Marat’s death would help prevent civil war, she assassinated him in Paris on 13 July 1793. His death was quickly commemorated by the Republic, while Corday was tried, convicted and guillotined four days later.
