About
A former soldier and gamekeeper at Maulévrier, Jean-Nicolas Stofflet was one of the first to lead local insurgents when the Vendéan rising began in March 1793. He became major-general under d’Elbée and La Rochejaquelein, then took command of the Army of Anjou and Upper Poitou after La Rochejaquelein’s death in 1794. He continued the war from the Mauges while repeatedly disputing strategy and authority with Charette. On 2 May 1795 he accepted a separate peace at Saint-Florent-le-Vieil. In January 1796, following instructions issued in the comte de Provence’s name, he resumed hostilities. Captured near La Poitevinière, he was condemned by a military commission and shot at Angers on 25 February 1796.
