May 29, 1760
Date of Death
January 21, 1793
About
A noble landowner and magistrate before 1789, Le Peletier represented the nobility in the Estates-General, then supported the abolition of hereditary distinctions and voted for the execution of Louis XVI. On 20 January 1793, Philippe-Nicolas-Marie de Pâris, a former royal bodyguard, mortally wounded him with a sword. The Convention accorded him public honours, while David organised his funeral and commemorated him in a now-lost painting. Le Peletier also drafted a plan placing children in publicly funded residential schools for a common civic education. Robespierre presented it on 13 July 1793, but its central provisions were not implemented.
