Alexis Chalbos

A notary’s son from the Lozère who enlisted as a private in 1751 and took thirty-eight years to reach captain, Chalbos was made general of brigade in May 1793 and general of division within the month. He commanded at Fontenay-le-Comte on 16 May, when the Vendéan attack was repulsed, and was the senior general on the field nine days later when Lescure and Bonchamps destroyed the republican force there. He led a column out of Niort in October, fought at the Moulin-aux-Chèvres and retook Châtillon by a night attack, and opposed Kléber’s encirclement plan in the council of war before Cholet. He held the interim command of the Army of the West from late October until he took sick leave in November. He served afterwards on the Rhine and died at Mainz in 1803.
