About
Born into the La Trémoille family, one of the highest-ranking noble houses in France, the prince de Talmont served with the émigré forces before joining the Vendéan insurgents at Saumur in June 1793. He became commander of the cavalry in the Army of Anjou. After defeat at Cholet forced the insurgent army across the Loire, he took part in its march through Laval towards Granville, where its leaders hoped to obtain British assistance. The campaign ended with defeats at Le Mans and Savenay in December. Talmont escaped with a small group but was captured soon afterwards. Condemned by a military commission, he was guillotined at Laval on 27 January 1794, near the château formerly owned by his family.
