About
A magistrate in the Parlement of Paris and a deputy for the Parisian nobility, Duport formed with Barnave and Alexandre de Lameth the group known as the triumvirate. He played a leading role in the Constituent Assembly’s judicial reforms, helping to establish elected judges and juries in criminal cases. After Varennes, he opposed bringing Louis XVI to trial and supported the preservation of the constitutional monarchy. Arrested following the overthrow of the monarchy in August 1792 and subsequently released, he left France. He returned after Thermidor but went into exile again following the coup of 18 Fructidor and died in Switzerland in 1798.
