Gaspard de Bernard de Marigny

A naval officer who had served in the American war and been trained as a gunner at Rochefort, Marigny was imprisoned at Bressuire as a suspect and freed when La Rochejaquelein took the town in May 1793. He commanded the artillery of the Catholic and Royal Army through the campaigns of that year and led the last square at Savenay that fought to cover the flight of the non-combatants. He was responsible for the massacre of several hundred prisoners at Châtillon in July 1793. In April 1794 he swore with Charette, Stofflet and Sapinaud to assist one another on pain of death, then failed to appear at a rendezvous; a council of war presided over by Stofflet condemned him to death in his absence. He was shot at La Girardière on 10 July 1794.
