Jean-Baptiste Annibal Aubert du Bayet

Born in French Louisiana and brought up in Dauphiné, Aubert du Bayet served in the American war with Rochambeau’s corps and presided over the first popular society at Grenoble. Elected to the Legislative Assembly for the Isère, he presided over it in July 1792. He commanded in the garrison of Mainz until its capitulation in July 1793, was cleared by the Convention and led the Mainz troops into the Vendée, where he was beaten at Clisson; imprisoned under the Jacobins, he was released after Thermidor. He commanded the Army of the Coasts of Cherbourg at the time of the Quiberon landing in 1795 and was minister of war from November of that year until February 1796. Sent as ambassador to Constantinople with a mission to modernise the Ottoman arsenals, he died there in December 1797.
