Date of Death

About
A lawyer from Grenoble and one of the Constituent Assembly’s most prominent speakers, Barnave formed with Adrien Duport and Alexandre de Lameth the group known as the triumvirate. An early opponent of privilege, he later supported the preservation of a constitutional monarchy and, after the flight to Varennes, secretly advised the royal family on working within the Constitution of 1791. Documents revealing these contacts were used in the proceedings against him, and he was convicted by the Revolutionary Tribunal and guillotined in November 1793.
