About
One of the leading painters of revolutionary France, David was elected to the Convention in 1792, voted for the king’s execution and served on the Committee of General Security, where he signed arrest orders. He organised civic ceremonies and produced some of the Republic’s best-known political images, including The Death of Marat. Under Napoleon, he became First Painter to the Emperor. Exiled from France under the legislation passed against regicides after the Bourbon Restoration, he settled in Brussels and died there in 1825.
