Pierre-Suzanne Lucas de La Championnière

The son of a Nantes magistrate, with no military training whatever, Lucas de La Championnière was twenty-three when fifteen hundred peasants came to his house in March 1793 and required him to lead them. He served under La Cathelinière and then under Charette, chiefly in the cavalry, and became second-in-command of the division of the Pays de Retz. His mother died of exhaustion during the march into Normandy, his father was killed at Le Mans and his two sisters were guillotined at Alençon. He favoured peace, urged Charette to escape to England, and submitted in 1796. The memoirs he wrote between 1796 and 1798 are the only account left by an officer of Charette’s army, and the earliest narrative source for the killings at Les Lucs. He died in 1828.
