About
The second surviving son of Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette, Louis-Charles became dauphin after his elder brother’s death in June 1789. Imprisoned with his family in the Temple after 10 August 1792, he was recognised by royalists as Louis XVII following his father’s execution, but exercised no royal authority. In July 1793 he was separated from his mother and placed under Antoine Simon’s supervision. His health deteriorated during continued confinement, and he died on 8 June 1795, aged ten. An autopsy attributed his death to a long-standing scrofulous disease.
