Louis Sapinaud de La Verrie

A gentleman of the Gardes du corps who had served twenty-five years at court and retired in 1789, Sapinaud de La Verrie was sought out by the peasants of La Verrie in March 1793. He refused them twice, warning that it was the earthen pot against the iron pot and that they would be crushed, and accepted only on condition of absolute obedience. He became Royrand’s second in the army of the Centre and its effective commander in the field, holding the valley of the Lay from the camp of L’Oie. He led the first, unsuccessful attack on Luçon on 28 June, mounted as a diversion for the assault on Nantes. He was killed on 25 July 1793 at the Pont-Charron, in a night attack launched from Luçon by the republican general Tuncq.
