Pierre Constant de Suzannet

A cousin of Henri de La Rochejaquelein who had entered the Gardes françaises at sixteen and emigrated in 1791, Suzannet landed with the émigré expedition at Quiberon in 1795 and was among the few who escaped by swimming to the English ships. He joined Charette as a divisional commander and was expelled from France by Hoche after Charette’s death. In the rising of 1799 he commanded the army of the Bas-Poitou and was seriously wounded before Montaigu, and he signed the peace of Montfaucon in January 1800. Imprisoned under the Empire and implicated in Cadoudal’s conspiracy, he escaped from the fort of Joux. He raised the Vendée again in 1815, was mortally wounded at Rocheservière on 20 June, two days after Waterloo, and died the following dawn.
