Jean-François Moulin

A grocer’s son from Caen who worked as a military surveyor before the Revolution and volunteered in 1791, Moulin became a general of division at the end of 1793 after service in the Vendée, and afterwards commanded the Army of the Coasts of Brest and the Army of the Alps. He held the Paris military division in 1797. When the coup of 30 Prairial Year VII forced two Directors out, he was elected to the Directory in June 1799, having no national standing and owing his elevation chiefly to being in Paris with troops. At Brumaire he and Gohier refused to resign and were held at the Luxembourg under Moreau’s guard until they gave way. He later returned to service under the Empire and died in 1810.
