The youngest brother of Henri and Louis de La Rochejaquelein, Auguste was nine when the Vendéan uprising began in 1793 and spent part of his youth in emigration. He later entered the imperial cavalry and served in the Russian campaign of 1812, where he was badly wounded and captured at the battle of Borodino. During the Hundred Days, he commanded royalist forces in Haut-Poitou under his brother Louis and subsequently served as major-general of the Vendéan army. Under the Restoration he remained in the army, becoming a maréchal de camp and commanding a brigade during the French intervention in Spain in 1823. After the July Revolution, he supported the duchesse de Berry’s unsuccessful attempt to organise a royalist rising in the west in 1832. He later fought for the Miguelist and Carlist causes in Portugal and Spain before returning to France. He died in Paris in 1868.
