Guy Joseph de Donnissan

A former colonel of the grenadiers de France and grand seneschal of Guyenne who had retired with the rank of maréchal de camp, Donnissan withdrew from Paris to his château near Bressuire in 1791 and was arrested there with his son-in-law Lescure in the spring of 1793, being freed when the republicans evacuated the town. Too old for field command, he served the insurrection administratively, as president of its superior council at Châtillon and as governor in the king’s name of the country it held. He took part in planning the attack on Nantes. Following the army across the Loire, he arranged the secret burial of Lescure and was separated from his family at Savenay. Captured at Montrelais while trying to recross the river, he was shot at Angers on 8 January 1794.
