A lawyer and former magistrate from a noble family, Hérault de Séchelles was elected to the Legislative Assembly and later to the Convention. He joined the Committee of Public Safety in 1793 and played a leading part in preparing the Constitution of 1793, presenting the committee’s report and draft to the Convention on 10 June. After leaving the Committee at the end of that year, he was accused of relations with suspected foreign agents and brought before the Revolutionary Tribunal with Danton, Desmoulins and their co-defendants. He was guillotined on 5 April 1794.
