About
A journalist, lawyer and deputy, Brissot was one of the principal organisers of the Society of the Friends of the Blacks and the editor of the influential Patriote français. In the Legislative Assembly, he became a leading advocate of war against Austria and played a prominent part in debates on foreign policy. Deputies associated with him were commonly called Brissotins, although the broader and less clearly defined grouping later became known as the Girondins. Placed under arrest following the insurrection of 31 May and 2 June 1793, Brissot fled Paris but was captured, tried with other Girondin deputies and associates, and guillotined on 31 October 1793.
