About
A lawyer and Convention deputy, Barère served on the Committee of Public Safety from April 1793 until Thermidor. He frequently spoke for the committee before the Convention, presenting reports and proposed decrees on military affairs, including the levée en masse and the campaign in the Vendée. This made him one of the committee’s most visible spokesmen, although the measures he presented were committee policy rather than his alone. Condemned to deportation after Thermidor, he escaped and lived in hiding before returning to France under the Consulate. Exiled again after the Bourbon Restoration, he returned following the Revolution of 1830 and died in 1841.
