Étienne Charles de Loménie de Brienne

Bishop of Condom and from 1763 archbishop of Toulouse, Loménie de Brienne led the criticism of Calonne’s proposals in the Assembly of Notables and succeeded him at the head of the royal finances in May 1787. Unable to obtain registration of his tax edicts, he exiled the Parlement of Paris to Troyes in August 1787 and in May 1788 attempted to remove its powers of registration altogether. He was obliged to announce the convocation of the Estates-General and resigned that August. Created a cardinal in December 1788, he later took the oath to the Civil Constitution of the Clergy and was elected constitutional bishop of the Yonne. Arrested at Sens, he was found dead in custody in February 1794.
