About
A career officer who served briefly as minister for foreign affairs and war in 1792, Dumouriez commanded one of the French armies that halted the Prussian advance at Valmy, alongside Kellermann, before defeating the Austrians at Jemappes and occupying much of the Austrian Netherlands. After his defeat at Neerwinden in March 1793, he entered negotiations with the Austrians and handed over commissioners sent by the Convention to arrest him. His attempt to persuade his troops to march against the Convention failed, and he crossed into Austrian lines. He spent the remainder of his life in exile, eventually settling in Britain, where he died in 1823.
