About
The son of Élie Fréron, the literary critic frequently attacked by Voltaire, Stanislas Fréron founded the revolutionary newspaper L’Orateur du peuple and was elected to the Convention. As a representative on mission in Provence, he joined Barras in overseeing the repression that followed the recapture of Marseille and Toulon. After Thermidor, he revived his newspaper as an anti-Jacobin publication and helped organise the groups of young men known as the jeunesse dorée (the golden youth). Sent to Saint-Domingue under the Consulate, he died at Les Cayes in 1802.
