About
A mathematician and deputy for the Puy-de-Dôme, Romme devoted much of his legislative work to public education and calendar reform. As rapporteur of the Committee of Public Instruction, he presented the plan for the republican calendar adopted in October 1793. It dated the republican era from 22 September 1792 and divided the year into twelve thirty-day months followed by complementary days, while Fabre d’Églantine later supplied its nomenclature. During the occupation of the Convention on 1 Prairial Year III, Romme proposed the release of imprisoned patriots and supported measures demanded by the insurgents. After the crowd was expelled, the Convention annulled these decisions and ordered his arrest. A military commission convicted him of participating in the insurrection and sentenced him to death. He stabbed himself after the verdict and died on 17 June 1795.
