A Genevan banker and political writer, Clavière went into exile after the defeat of the Genevan revolution of 1782 and settled in Paris. He collaborated with Mirabeau on financial questions and later became closely associated with Brissot. Appointed minister of finance twice, first from March to June 1792 and again after the overthrow of the monarchy, he remained in office until the fall of the Girondins in June 1793. Arrested and held for several months, he died by suicide in prison on 8 December 1793 after learning that he was to appear before the Revolutionary Tribunal.
