About
A constitutional priest in the Gravilliers section, Jacques Roux became a prominent spokesman for demands that the Convention curb food prices and punish hoarding and speculation. On 25 June 1793, he presented an address from the Gravilliers and Bonne-Nouvelle sections and the Cordeliers Club, later known as the Manifesto of the Enragés. It argued that constitutional rights offered little protection while subsistence remained insecure. Roux worked with, and sometimes against, other militants later grouped under the Enragé label, but led no formal organisation. After several arrests in late 1793, he remained imprisoned and died on 10 February 1794 following a suicide attempt.
