About
A Prussian baron who adopted the name Anacharsis and called himself the “orator of the human race”, Cloots advocated a universal republic founded on the political unity of mankind. In June 1790, he appeared before the National Assembly at the head of a delegation presented as representatives of the peoples of the world. Elected to the Convention in 1792, he supported dechristianisation and argued for the extension of the Revolution beyond France. His foreign birth and association with the Hébertists later made him a target of the revolutionary government. He was guillotined with them in March 1794.
