About
An advocate from Sézanne, Thuriot first became prominent on 14 July 1789, when he entered the Bastille with a municipal delegation seeking its surrender. Elected to the Legislative Assembly and then the Convention, he voted for Louis XVI’s death and served briefly on the Committee of Public Safety. On 27 July 1794, while presiding over part of the Convention’s sitting, he repeatedly denied Robespierre the floor and helped secure his arrest. Thuriot nevertheless opposed some of the prosecutions directed against former members of the revolutionary government. Accused of involvement in the popular disturbances of spring 1795, he escaped arrest and remained in hiding until the October amnesty. He later held senior judicial office under Napoleon, was exiled as a regicide in 1816 and died in Liège in 1829.
