Merchant-marine officer and Protestant pastor before the Revolution, Jeanbon Saint-André was elected to the Convention for the Lot and entered the Committee of Public Safety on 10 July 1793. He concentrated on naval affairs. During missions to Brest and Toulon, he supervised changes to personnel, discipline, supply and port administration, and accompanied Villaret-Joyeuse’s fleet during the operations of 9 to 13 Prairial Year II. Later appointed consul at Algiers and Smyrna, he was detained by Ottoman authorities after the French expedition to Egypt. Released in 1801, he became prefect of Mont-Tonnerre at Mainz, where he died of typhus in 1813.
