About
A novelist and political journalist, Louvet de Couvray was elected to the Convention for the Loiret in 1792 and associated closely with Brissot, Roland and deputies later grouped as Girondins. On 29 October he accused Robespierre of seeking personal ascendancy and of responsibility for the September killings, allegations the Convention declined to pursue after Robespierre’s reply. Decreed under arrest on 2 June 1793 and later outlawed, Louvet escaped and remained hidden until after 9 Thermidor. Recalled in March 1795, he briefly presided over the Convention, helped draft the Constitution of Year III and later sat in the Council of Five Hundred.
