Louis-Marie de Salgues, marquis de Lescure
Date of Birth
October 13, 1766
Date of Death
November 4, 1793
About
A noble officer during the 1793 War in the Vendée, Lescure commanded insurgent forces from Haut-Poitou, helped force the passage at Thouars, led the left wing at Fontenay-le-Comte and Saumur, and rallied troops at Torfou. His wife’s memoirs and other royalist accounts emphasise his piety, self-command, personal courage, and restraint towards prisoners, earning him the nickname "the Saint of Poitou," though this portrait is inherently partisan. Shot in the head at La Tremblaye on 15 October, he died near La Pellerine on 4 November. Lescure had married Victoire de Donnissan in 1791; after his death, she married Louis de La Rochejaquelein and became widely known through her Mémoires as the Marquise de La Rochejaquelein.
