About
Fouquier-Tinville served as public prosecutor of the Revolutionary Tribunal from March 1793 until shortly after 9 Thermidor. He prepared indictments, conducted prosecutions and oversaw much of the Tribunal’s daily work as its procedures became increasingly restrictive, particularly after the Law of 22 Prairial. Arrested in August 1794, he was tried the following spring alongside judges and jurors from the former Tribunal. He argued that he had acted in accordance with laws and decrees passed by the Convention. He was convicted with fifteen co-defendants and guillotined on 7 May 1795.
