An advocate at Dax elected to the Convention for the Landes, Ducos sat with the Plaine and voted for the king’s death without appeal or reprieve. He presided over the Jacobin Club in January 1794 and over the Council of Ancients at the coup of 18 Fructidor. Brought into the Directory by Barras in June 1799, he attached himself to Bonaparte at Brumaire and became one of the three provisional consuls, the junior member of the three. Under the Empire he sat in the Senate, becoming its vice-president, and was made a count in 1808. Exiled as a regicide in 1816, he was killed when his carriage overturned on the road out of Stuttgart.
