About
Charles de Lameth served in the American War of Independence and was wounded at Yorktown before his election for the nobility of Artois in 1789. He joined the Third Estate and supported freedom of the press, religious liberty and the abolition of titles. A prominent early Jacobin, he joined the Feuillant club after the split of July 1791 and opposed the deposition of Louis XVI. After protesting against 10 August 1792, he was arrested at Rouen, released, and emigrated to Hamburg. He later held military governorships under Napoleon and sat as a constitutional royalist deputy from 1829 to 1831.
