About
A writer and close political collaborator of her husband, Jean-Marie Roland, Manon Roland made their Paris home a meeting place for Brissot and several allied deputies. She maintained political correspondence, edited Roland’s writings and helped draft texts issued under his name, giving her a substantial but unofficial role in the couple’s political work. Arrested on 1 June 1793, she spent much of her imprisonment composing memoirs that combined personal recollection with a sustained defence of herself, her husband and their associates. Convicted of conspiracy by the Revolutionary Tribunal, she was guillotined on 8 November 1793.
