About
A military engineer of remarkable ability and member of the Committee of Public Safety, Carnot played a central part in the organisation of the Republic’s armies during Year II. His name remains attached to the levies, planning, and coordination that helped sustain the armies of the Revolution and later earned him the title of “organiser of victory”. His career did not end there. Carnot survived the fall of the Jacobin government, held office under the Directory, served Napoleon as Minister of War, and after 1815 finished his life in exile.
