Birth of Jean-Baptiste-Joseph Gobel
Jean-Baptiste-Joseph Gobel was born in Thann on 1 September 1727, the son of an advocate before the Sovereign Council of Alsace; his uncle was the bishop of Basel. During the Revolution he became the state-recognised archbishop of Paris and publicly renounced the priesthood amid a wider campaign against organised Christianity.
